Saint Andrew Catholic School is excited to offer the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program once weekly for all of our preschool and kindergarten students as part of our religious education curriculum. Students visit the atrium - the space prepared especially for the child to work and study about sacred scripture and the sacraments.
"Catechesis of the Good Shepherd recognizes that a relationship already exists between the child and God, and it seeks to help the child enjoy that relationship". - Patti Franz
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a unique approach to the religious formation of children ages 3 - 12. It began in 1954 through the work of Dr. Sofia Cavaletti a Biblical scholar trained in Catholic theology, and Gianna Gobbi, a Montessori educator; CGS is structured through the educational principals founded by Maria Montessori. In Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, children learn from materials that have been primarily made by the catechists and developed as the result of many hours of observation over the last 70 years according to the needs of the child at each developmental stage. Reading short excerpts of the Word (sacred scripture) is a daily aspect of the work in the atrium. Through presentations in the atrium - the space prepared especially for the child to work and study about sacred scripture and the sacraments - the child comes to know the Good Shepherd and the teachings of our faith.
